The Flying Boats of Shediac Bay
During the 1930s, several historic flying boats events occurred on Shediac Bay that put the name of Shediac on the world map and on newspaper headlines. This era was regarded as the Golden Age of Aviation, with many significant technological advancements. Wade Short of the Flying Boats Historical Society offers a presentation that relives these historic events, shows what other locations have done to preserve their flying boats history, and what we can do in Shediac to preserve our history as well.
📅 Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2025
🕖 Time: 7 pm - 8 pm

The Flying Boats Historical Society was created with a goal to preserve this almost 100-year old history. Recognizing that most of Shediac's townspeople have little recollection of these events, the Society has first embarked on a program of public awareness.

Ever heard of the "Quoddy Tidal Project"?
US President Franklin Roosevelt proposed to build the world’s largest hydro-electric generating plant—in Maine—using the ocean tides as the source of power. Not only did he propose it—in 1935 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and 5,000 employees began building it.
If that surprises you, then you will want to hear Mark C. Borton present the fascinating story of the “Quoddy Tidal Power Project,” a tale filled with intrigue and outrage, triumphs and failures. Now nearly forgotten, Quoddy was headline news in the 1930s, thanks to an international cast of famous protagonists, dirty money and politics, fake news, monopoly power and trust-busting, and surprising links to Europe and World War II.
Books will be available for sale and signed by the author.
